Open The Book

The vision of Open the Book is for every child to hear the story of the Bible at school in their primary years.

Open the Book aims to:

  • present the Bible in primary schools in an accessible and enjoyable way, and enable children to engage imaginatively with the stories
  • help primary schools meet statutory collective worship obligations
  • contribute to children’s religious, spiritual and moral education
  • encourage links between schools and churches in a local context

Open the Book began in Bedford in 1999 and was launched in Malvern in 2011. A rota of teams of about four to five volunteer storytellers from lour local churches present Bible stories every week to six primary schools in the Malvern area. Our volunteers enjoy getting to know the children, making links with the schools and exploring the Bible afresh for themselves. Because the stories are so carefully scripted and directed they are easy to present and the preparation isn’t hard.
